How do you watch movies? Empty How do you watch movies?

When it comes to new movies, I usually go to the cinema. Or I watch a DVD on my computer, I have a pretty large collection (I don't buy new ones anymore). But most of all, I buy movies through Google TV. This has become the most convenient way to get what I want and when I want it. Most of the horror classics are available there! I used to have Netflix and some other streaming services before, but they were too addictive, so I gave it up. I have recently purchased Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends and Scream (2022) on Google TV.

How about you?

I always see new movies in the theater, and I see a LOT of movies. I buy the ones I like on DVD, but that takes up space. I'll occasionally watch something on Amazon Prime. I don't think of streaming as being more convenient necessarily.

Where do you buy DVDs? In Walmart? I think Best Buy got rid of them, I used to buy them over there, when I was in the U.S. long time ago.

Indeed, taking space is an issue. I have therefore decided not buy anything physical anymore and I'm even planning to get an e-book reader soon. Might buy some action figures in future though, they're very easy to place in my room. But not DVDs and books.

I get DVDs from Amazon and FYE. I don't really care too much about taking up space. With books, I prefer to actually hold the book in my hands. But, I may a byproduct of an era that seems to be fading away.

I get a lot of DVDs from Mega Replay. With all the streaming, people don't use DVDs as much and occasionally you find a underrated gem. I also peruse through TUBI and Hulu and sometimes find a movie worth a watch. I have six bookshelves filled with them. There are times I will pull out at random and watch it. Last weekend it was Clue

Clue as in the movie based on the board game Clue, yes. Stars Tim Curry, Michael McKean, Madeline Kahn, Martin Moll, Christopher Lloyd, and a few others. One of the best movies to come out of the 80s

How many streaming services do you have? I'd do more but monthly costs add up.

order online. Im a fan of Arrow video way more than scream/shout factory these days. My feelings about theaters have changed. I feel like we all have big screen tvs and surround sound. Who wants to pay 75 dollars for two tickets, two things of pop corn and soda? (im exaggerating the price but you know what I mean). Let alone all the people talking and on their phones during the movie. I got a 75 inch tv surround sound..and great speakers. I got the movie experience at home. I do enjoy when movies are released thru streaming. I am fine without the movie theater experience. I know people will frown upon that.. I will only go to a movie theater near me when they are showing old movies on 35 mm.

I got tricked a few years ago that they were going to do the original halloween on 35mm but it ended up being the DVD. BUT last summer they did friday the 13th part 1-4 with 35mm in a small minneapolis local theater and it was one of my favorite times in a long time. People shouting at the screen and cheering.

I have Tubi, but since baseball season is here, I'll be spending time at Yankee Stadium watching games. This cuts into my movie time.

I hate people interrupting the movie as well, but what I just realized is that if you pick the right theatre and time to watch the movie, you can easily avoid them. That's how it works at my place.

Something I've noticed in movie theaters is parents bringing their kids with light up shoes. It's like seeing cars with lights rotating around the license plate. I know why that happens, but it can distract people.

For new movies, we've actually got a little drive-in in our town that we like to go to. It's so much cheaper than going to a theater. $20 per vehicle, and they don't care how many you cram in there. When we went to see Godzilla vs. Kong we took the seats out of our van and took myself, my wife, our 4 kids, plus my wife's cousin and her three kids. All of us got in for $20. You can eat at their concession, which is still pretty expensive but it's burgers and chicken and some pretty good stuff, or you can hit up Little Caesar's and take some pizza with you (which is what we usually do).

Anything else we just use one of the streaming services. We jump back and forth between Netflix and Paramount and Max every couple of months. I actually enjoy Vudu (I'm not sure it's called that anymore), which is where my digital copies of the Friday the 13th films are. It's got some pretty good free movie options, though not as many as it used to. Not always great stuff, but sometimes you can find some gems. That's where I saw Martyrs and finally got to see Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.

I'm done with cinemas for a few reasons.

- The price isn't great
- I don't want to be sat in a seat that's had some unwashed teenager in it before me
- I hate previews and go out of my way to avoid them
- Why am I seeing adverts when I'm paying this much
- Would rather buy snacks somewhere cheaper
- People can't put down their phones for two hours these days and are pricks
- Can't guarantee the picture quality (one of the last three films I saw in the Cinema was The Predator and it was slightly blurred for the whole thing)
- The volume is far too loud. I've actually got tinnitus from seeing Matrix 3 in 2003. After all the metal gigs I've been to and played at, Matrix 3 was what got me.

So I watch films at home on a 65 inch TV that's about 5-6 foot away. Decent sound bar. Comfy sofa. My snacks. And a toilet just across the landing (pretty important when you're almost 50!).

I like just staying home watching movies, too many distractions at the cinemas. Cinemas were good in the 80s and 90s but its just not the same anymore.
I like complete silence and no eating so that I can immerse myself in the movie. Even at home during movie nights we put privacy screens inbetween myself and girlfriend and 11 yo.son so that we don't distract each other by seeing each other.
I prefer dvd over streaming services because I like to keep my movies and own them.I also still watch VHS movies as I also collect those.
I've probably got well over a thousand dvds and many VHS tapes

You have a point about eating. I used to eat chips and drink while watching a movie at home and then realized I'm not even focusing on the movie. I had to stop doing it altogether.

As for DVDs and VHS, here in Slovakia, where I'm from, you can mostly get them in second hand shops or people selling old copies on the internet. Stores that used to sell DVDs are slowly getting rid of them, because there hardly is anyone to still keep releasing them. People used to say DVDs will last forever, but the reality here is that 10 years from now on, they will be considered something totally ancient. Luckily I have a big collection at home that I will keep no matter what and other people like me can consider themselves lucky, since times will come when we won't be getting the new ones, unless you order them from Amazon or something.

Hope this made sense. I just decribed the situation in my region, it may of course vary depending where one's from.

You make good points here. Going to a concession stand takes time (and is expensive), and you miss some of the movie. I'll be keeping my DVDs as well!!!!
